Detailed inspection of assembled PCB's is generally performed using either a traditional microscope, a specialist stereo microscope such as those offered by Vision Engineering or the good old magnifying lamp. All these solutions have their own benefits and continue to play a role in the inspection process however in a recent search to improve our own inspection capabilities we discovered a new tool which:

• provides the high magnification capabilities of a traditional microscope
• enables the working distance of a magnifying lamp at lower magnification levels
• uses a PC or laptop screen as the viewer

• allows you to save, annotate and email captured images quickly and easily
• is hand held and portable
• includes integrated measurement functionality (only certain models)

The tool is a USB digital microscope and the model we currently use for our inspection needs and that was used to generate the example images on the right is the AM413T.
